TELL US ABOUT ASH // I am obsessed with foxes and I own 5 miniature dachshunds, they can be a handful but they are my family.

Hey Ash! Thanks for chatting with us and for being a Vegan advocate, how long have you been vegan for?

I have been vegan for a little over a year now but haven’t eaten meat in over two years. I went vegetarian first and then eased myself into a complete plant based diet.

What motivated you to make the change?

My love for animals is what motivated me to make the switch. I’ve always stated how much I love animals and there were times when people would say to me, if you love them so much why do you eat them? That really stuck with me. At the end of the day we are all the same, we are all earthlings. Humans have a soul and so do the animals. We physically don’t need meat or dairy in our bodies to survive and I have become so much more aware and have learnt so much since becoming vegan.

How hard was the shift?

It was hard at the start because it was a whole new world I knew nothing about. I had been eating meat and dairy my whole life so I had a lot to learn but I also knew that this was meant for me. Growing up I was always very particular and fussy with the meat that I ate and when I would cook with raw meat it freaked me out. Looking back, things like that were signs that I should of made the change years ago! After a while it just becomes second nature and it’s actually quite simple now, especially when eating out. Vegan options are available at a lot of places now and if they aren’t you can just ask the chef to take away certain ingredients or see if they can prepare something for you.

Did you have any problems, if so how did you overcome them?

Not necessarily any problems, more so little hurdles here and there. I found it hard when going to events like a friends birthday or family gatherings because there wasn’t ever vegan food around but I just started to prepare my own meals before hand and always have my own food to bring to the table. Preparation is key when it comes to things like that.

You have always been a fitness advocate, what are your most effective training methods and did you find any difficulties making the switch?

When it comes to training, consistency is key. You also have to find what works for you and something that you actually enjoy doing. If you are in the gym lifting weights and hating it, try something new! There are so many ways to move your body and incorporating different activities into your workouts is always great. I found a love for Yoga last year and went back to doing things that I actually enjoyed like gymnastics.

I can’t say I had any difficulties, if anything I actually had more energy and felt more alive!

Do you use vegan supplements now?

I do! Not many though, as I try to get most of my essential amino acids and nutrients from the foods I am eating but I do always have a plant based protein powder that I add into smoothies, overnight oats, pancakes and also just as a shake on its own with water after I finish a workout.

What's your favourite vegan meal?

That is a really hard question! Haha

My best friend Sheridyn really opened up my eyes to a lot of new foods when I first went vegan. She is an amazing cook!

There is one dish she makes which is her nonna’s stuffed artichokes and that has to be one of my all time favourite meals.

Where's your favourite vegan place to eat?

If I feel like something really fresh, green and healthy I will go to Organic Feast at East Maitland. They always have plenty of vegan options which is amazing!

If I’m feeling something a little more indulgent I’ll go to Bonta Vera at Minmi. Everything on their menu is 100% vegan and they make the best burgers!

Any advice for newbie vegans?

My best advice would be to experiment in the kitchen! If there is a meal that you love and feel like you are going to miss, make a vegan version! There is always an alternative.

Also to be prepared. If you are going to an event, birthday, work, anything like that and know that there probably isn’t going to be a vegan option available, bring your own food. That is something I always do.
